The Obi Abata (or kola nut) in Santería and Yoruba traditions is considered a sacred messenger used for divination and direct communication with the Orishas and Irunmoles. It is primarily used to seek spiritual guidance, protection, and healing, allowing practitioners to receive revelations from the spiritual realm.
- Divination and Consultation: It is used to ask direct questions to the deities, allowing priests or practitioners to interpret the will of the Orishas through the position in which the lobes of the nut fall.
- Confirmation of Processes: It serves to accompany or confirm spiritual processes, not necessarily replacing Ifá, but working in conjunction with it.
- Offering and Connection: Unlike the coconut (Obi Kola) popularized in Cuba, the Obi Abata (generally with 4 lobes or "Iya Obi") is the traditional instrument for establishing a bridge of communication, representing both masculine and feminine energies.
