In Santería (the Orisha-Ifá tradition), a lined gourd for Oggún is a sacred vessel used primarily as a ritual element to place offerings (adimú) and perform works of strength, protection, and opening of paths.
It is generally made from the fruit of the calabash, lined with beads (seed beads) in colors representative of Oggún (usually purple, green, and black or red and black).
- Offerings (Adimú): It is used to present foods such as roasted yam, green plantain, fried carita beans, or even honey and aguardiente to the deity.
- Reinforcement and Ceremonies: It is placed in front of Oggún's caldero to prepare specific works ordained by Ifá or to receive ritual adimú offerings, such as pieces of coconut with corojo fat (epo) and smoked fish.
- Container of elements: It serves to place the orisha's reinforcements inside, such as railroad spikes, metal tools, or to prepare omiero (sacred herbal water).
- Spiritual connection: It acts as a tool to connect with the orisha of strength, work, and iron.
