In Santería (the Orisha-Ifá tradition), cowrie shells, including the types used as "queens" or large shells within consecrations, are fundamental elements of the divination system known as Diloggún.
Divination and Consultation (Diloggún): It is the main instrument used by santeros (olorishas) to communicate with the Orishas. Through the reading of the cowrie shells (how they fall), the person's past, present, and future are interpreted.
- Advising and Guiding: The reading seeks to provide answers about the consulted person's luck, love, health, and family, offering practical or spiritual advice.
- Determination of Ebbó (Cleanings): They serve to determine what type of ebbó (offering, sacrifice, or cleaning) the person needs to resolve their difficulties.
- Symbol of Power and Protection: Cowrie shells, such as those of Olokun, represent the strength of the sea, protection, and wealth.
- Representation of the Orishas: Certain large cowrie shells are associated with specific deities and are used to reinforce or "feed" the sacred stones (otás) that represent the Orishas
