Carmelita or brown river stones (known in the Yoruba religion as otanes or otás) are primarily used to consecrate the deities of the pantheon that represent fresh water and the earth, such as Ochún (the owner of the rivers), Aggayú Solá and, occasionally, Obá or Orisha Oko.
Ochún: Her otanes are collected in the river and are usually light carmelita tones, golden, or porous river stones. They represent love, sweetness, and fertility.
Aggayú Solá: Owner of the violent river and the firm earth. His stones are usually large, dark, or reddish carmelita and irregularly shaped.
Obá: Carmelita or soapy water-colored stones are used, since he rules over sacrifice and lakes.
Orisha Oko: Deity of agriculture and the earth, also uses otanes in brown or tile tones
