The lined jícara (also known as an igba), especially when decorated with red and black beads or cowrie shells dedicated to Eleguá, is an essential ritual instrument in Santería (Yoruba Religion) used to honor, feed, and connect with Eleguá. Eleguá is the orisha who opens paths, protects the home, and serves as the messenger of the gods, which is why this jícara is fundamental for his offerings.
- Offering Container (Addimú): It is used to place fresh offerings such as roasted corn (aguado), guinea pig, and smoked fish (eku, eya), sweets, candies, or coconut, ingredients that symbolize abundance and prosperity.
- Seat or Container of the Orisha: On occasions, it is used to rest the otá (stone) or the prepared coconut that represents Eleguá.
- Attention and Petitions: It is placed near the front door or on the altar (boveda) to perform the weekly attentions (generally on Mondays). By lining it with the colors red and black, the connection with his specific energy is personalized.
- Opening of Paths: When presenting the jícara with offerings, Eleguá is asked to open the doors of prosperity, health, and work, while protecting the home against negative energies.
