In Santería and the Yoruba religion, the wooden bat (or wooden staff) is a consecrated ceremonial tool, used primarily to invoke the energy of the orishas, defend the believer, and direct spiritual force.
- Representation of Changó (Shango): This is the most common use. The bat symbolizes the power, virility, thunder, and justice of Changó, the orisha of thunder and fire. It is often decorated with red and white beads, colors representative of this deity.
- Defense and protection: It is used in personal and spiritual defense rituals, acting as a shield against negative energies.
- Direction of energy: Priests and babalawos use it in ceremonies to "move" or direct the ashe (life force) during spiritual workings, invocations, or sacrifices.
- Staff of Command/Eggun: Although different in shape from a traditional baseball bat, wooden staffs (or Eggun staffs) are essential for invoking the ancestors (egungun). These staffs are usually carved, braided, or charged with spiritual elements to establish a connection with the dead.
