In Santería and the Orisha religion, ebbó (cleansing or purification) seeks to transmute negative energy into positive energy. A small two-faced mask is a highly symbolic and spiritual element used primarily with Eshu or Elegguá.

• Representing duality: It symbolizes that in life and in the spiritual world, everything has two sides (good and evil, light and darkness, health and illness).
• Balance and control: It is used to ask Elegguá/Eshu to control both good and evil and to help open or close paths as appropriate.
• Deceiving or diverting negativity: In certain path-clearing ebós, the mask serves to prevent bad intentions, envy, or dark entities from recognizing the person. The two faces "confuse" evil, showing one face while the other remains alert to any danger.
