In the context of Santería (Regla de Ocha) and related religions such as Palo Monte, the wooden crucifix is primarily used as an element of protection, spiritual authority, and connection with higher forces, often serving as a syncretism between the Catholic faith and Afro-Cuban beliefs.

• Home Protection: It is placed in strategic locations, such as the entrance of the house, to protect against negative energies, envy, and disturbing spirits.
• Strength and Spiritual Power: Wood, especially when combined with metal elements or consecrated, represents the firmness and power of entities such as the spirit of the dead (eggun) or certain Orishas.
• Syncretism and Devotion: It serves as a point of contact with Catholic deities that are syncretized in Santería, being a symbol of faith and sacrifice.
• Cleanings and Rituals: It can be used in spiritual cleansing workings to strengthen the presence of the officiant and ensure that evil is kept away.
