Yam (Ishu) is a fundamental tuber in Santería (Regla de Ocha), used primarily as Addimú (offering) to the Orishas to attract prosperity, balance, overcome enemies, and strengthen spiritual connection. It is central to rituals at the feet of Eleguá and is used for saint "baptisms" in houses of worship.
- Offering (Addimú): It is used raw, cooked, or in powder form (iyé) to feed the saints and obtain their favors.
- Ebbó (Cleansing/Work): It is specially prepared for Eleguá, the owner of the roads, to open paths and overcome obstacles.
- "Baptism" of Yam: A traditional ceremony (originating from the Chagga and Ewegodo ethnic groups) considered a great Addimú, where the deity is honored with large quantities of this fruit.
- Symbolism: It represents strength, longevity, and the connection with the earth and the ancestors.
