Our Lady of Aparecida is the patroness of Brazil, a dark terracotta image found in 1717 that represents the Virgin Mary. Due to her dark color and aquatic origin, in religious syncretism (especially in Brazilian Umbanda), she is frequently associated with Oxum (orisha of fresh waters) or Yemayá (queen of the sea).
- Meaning in the Yoruba Religion/Syncretism: Although she is a Catholic figure, her black image has allowed Afro-Brazilian culture to adopt her. She is seen as a manifestation of loving feminine strength, the "mother of Brazil" who welcomes everyone.
