Olokun is the powerful Orisha who owns the depths of the ocean in the Yoruba religion, representing the sea in its most fearsome state, the secrets of the seabed, health, mental stability, and wealth. He is androgynous (man/woman) and is revered for his immense power over life and death.

  • Owner of the Ocean: His name comes from the Yoruba Oló (owner) and Okún (ocean).
  • Androgynous and Mysterious: Olokun is considered to have an androgynous nature, being a man or a woman depending on the tradition. He is often depicted wearing a mask to hide his face, symbolizing the inscrutable secrets of the deep.
  • Fearsome Deity: Olokun is seen as the negative side of Yemayá; while she unites, Olokun can separate. He is one of the most dangerous and powerful deities in Osha-Ifá.
  • Cult of Prosperity: Although associated with the terror of the sea, he is also revered as a source of great wealth, fertility, health, and prosperity.
  • Colors and Foundation: He is associated with the colors blue, white, or black. His worship is fundamental for both Olochas and Babalawos.
