Oyá (Yoruba: Ọya also known as Oyá or Oiá, Yansá or Yansã or Iansá in Latin America) is an Orisha of the winds, lightning, and violent storms, death, and rebirth. She is similar to the Haitian Maman Brigitte, who is syncretized with the Catholic Saint Brigid.

Oyá is the major Orisha in the Yoruba religion who governs the winds, lightning, hurricanes, and transformation, representing the impetuous feminine force and necessary change. As a warrior, she guards the gate of the cemeteries (relationship with Ikú, death) and symbolizes reincarnation and justice, often syncretized with the Virgin of Candelaria.

  • Dominion over Nature: Mistress of hurricane winds, whirlwinds, and lightning.
  • Warrior of Change: She represents the intensity of life, drastic change, and the destruction necessary for renewal.
  • Relationship with Death: She guards the cemetery gate, facilitating the passage of souls, and is closely linked to Ikú.
  • Image and Representation: She is often depicted with two swords, a horse tail (Iruke) to control spirits and winds, and colors such as burgundy, brown, tan, or multicolored dresses (except black).
