Saint Christopher

Saint Christopher is known as the patron saint of travelers and, by
extension, motorists

In the Yoruba religion, the image of Saint Christopher is syncretized with Aggayu, the Orisha presiding over volcanoes, magma, the desert, and turbulent rivers. He represents the immense force of nature, lava, earthquakes, and volcanic energy that transforms the earth.

• Syncretic meaning: During the colonial era, enslaved Africans associated Saint Christopher with Aggayú because of his depiction as a strong giant crossing turbulent rivers, reflecting the Orisha's power to overcome difficult obstacles and control violent natural forces.
• Depiction in Santería: The image of the bearded saint carrying the Christ Child symbolizes Aggayú's ability to carry heavy loads, protect travelers, and his role as a feared and powerful figure.
