In Yoruba syncretism (Santería/Lucumí), Saint Martin of Tours is primarily syncretized with the orisha Eleguá (or Elegbara), the messenger, the one who opens and closes paths, the deity of crossroads and destiny, due to his characteristic of riding a horse and being a traveler who connects worlds, just as Eleguá opens/closes paths and is a messenger between the orishas and humans. Both are key figures for initiating ceremonies and are invoked for protection, although Eleguá is more associated with the colors red and black, and Saint Martin of Tours with his mount.
