In Yoruba syncretism (Santería), Saint Peter is primarily associated with the orisha Ogun , the god of iron, war, technology, and roads, because both are represented with keys and are linked to metallic elements (Ogun is a blacksmith, and keys are made of metal). This syncretism was a strategy used by enslaved people to preserve their African beliefs under a Catholic guise, associating Ogun with Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint John the Baptist, and Saint Michael the Archangel, depending on the region or specific tradition.
