Traditionally depicted with two eyes in her hand or on a plate, Saint Lucy is the patron saint of sight and a symbol of spiritual enlightenment. In the Yoruba religion/Santería, she is syncretized with Aleguema (or Alegba), a messenger orisha of Changó associated with light, vision, and protection, used to ask for clarity and protection against eye ailments.
Saint Lucy of Syracuse is shown with a palm branch (martyr) and her own eyes on a tray, often dressed in white and red.
- Spiritual Vision: She is invoked to improve "spiritual sight," discern good from evil, and find the way in the darkness.
- Syncretism: Aleguema is one of the syncretized representations of Saint Lucy in the Yoruba pantheon, being an orisha of light.
- Protection: "Saint Lucy's little eyes" (operculum, a Mediterranean shell) are used as powerful amulets against the evil eye and to attract good luck.
