In the Yoruba-Afro-Cuban syncretism (Santería/Lucumí), Saint Rita of Cascia, known for her intercession in difficult causes and her life of sacrifice and pain, is strongly syncretized with the orisha Obba (or Obbá), the warrior orisha who represents repressed love, sacrifice for love (the mutilation of an ear), conjugal fidelity and pain, inhabiting cemeteries and associated with lakes and lagoons, similar to the figure of the martyred saint.
