The Virgin of Guadalupe in Yoruba syncretism is not a direct association like with other virgins (e.g., Oshun with the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre), but Guadalupe represents the syncretism between the Mexica mother goddess Tonantzin and the Virgin Mary, an event more closely linked to the indigenous cultures of Mexico and Spanish evangelization; while Yoruba syncretism is centered in West Africa and the Caribbean, merging orishas with Catholic saints, although both are examples of how deities and Marian figures are integrated to form new religious identities.
